Independence Day: Resurgence is a 2016 American science fiction film directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Emmerich, Dean Devlin, Nicolas Wright, James A. Woods, and James Vanderbilt. The film is a sequel to the 1996 film Independence Day, and stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, and Jessie Usher. The plot of the film is that a new alien threat emerges and the nations of Earth must band together once again to save the planet. The trailer for the film features scenes of alien ships attacking major cities, as well as footage of the characters from the first film, including Will Smith’s character, who does not appear in the sequel. The film was released in June 2016 but received mixed reviews and was considered as a box office disappointment.
Independence Day: Resurgence is set twenty years after the events of the first film, Independence Day. In the first film, humanity successfully repelled an alien invasion of Earth and destroyed the alien mothership.
In the sequel, the nations of Earth have used recovered alien technology to improve their military capabilities and establish a unified defense program. However, a new alien threat emerges, and the nations of Earth must band together once again to save the planet. The main characters from the first film, including Jeff Goldblum’s David Levinson and Bill Pullman’s President Thomas J. Whitmore, return to lead the fight against the aliens. Additionally, new characters are introduced, including a younger generation of pilots, including the stepson of Will Smith’s character, who died in an accident during the intervening years.
